I was neither a writer nor the son of a writer. But I began to write whenever I was invited and often to promote a development cause or document a transformation or present a story of a significant change. No fictions and no secondary stories or researches. My writings are first hand and primary. Joash needs a school that attends Dyslexics
‘Yahweh has given’, that is the meaning of the word Joash and we named him after this with much thinking and prayer. Joash had all milestones normal and often he was too smart. It is 13 ½ years now and we continue to believe that the Lord is at work in him and cares for him than what we do. But as parents we continue to seek and knock that the Lord will open the right door for his schooling. This search for the right learning situation for Joash started about six years ago and we have gone through different schools and centers so far.

We have come to a point of confirmation that Joash has to go to a school with resources and facility to see him through his schooling. He needs professional attention and a well planned, cumulative and resourceful remediation.

Recent Educational Assessment
We had to go for another educational assessment for Joash since the last one was done 3 years ago.

1. Comment from an international teacher in India
Joash was analyzed by an experienced teacher from UK on 28 February 2006, in connection with a pre- evaluation of an international school.

“Joash is a pleasant boy who despite the serious nature of his difficulties with spelling and reading was willing to attempt all tasks asked of him. He will, however, face increasing uncertainties as studies become more complex – that is as vocabulary becomes more subject specific and expansive….. …..”

“Joash urgently needs some formalized, structured, cumulative teaching to give him reasons why words are read and spelt as they are. This will take away the guess work tactics he now employs to attempt spellings and decoding words”. –C.M.

2. The final Report

Here are a few important points from the three page report of a professional center at Madras (Tested on March 3, 2006):

“All his developmental milestones were reported as normal. He is the eldest of the three siblings and has a warm relationship with them. He lives in a. nuclear type of a family.
He is highly interested in playing with electronic equipments and understands their functions very well”.

“Joash is a pleasant thirteen-year-old boy who had no inhibitions in expressing his ideas. He followed the instructions well. During the test session he rested his chin on the table and worked through. The posture often needed to be corrected to help him apply to the task.

Cognitive Ability Standard score // Age Equivalent
1. Memory for Sentences 92 // 9.6 years
2. Visual matching 62 // 8.3 years
3. Analysis Synthesis 121 // 31 years
7. Concept Formation
Fluid Reasoning 101 // 13.10 years

The test profile shows, Joash's strength lies in fluid intelligence. He faces difficulty in the areas of reading, comprehension, writing and solving math problems. There is an overall discrepancy of three to six years, which makes it difficult for him to cope with his academic performance. He would need a full time or an intensive remedial help to enable him to take up his board exams in a few years time. His potential as seen from the cognitive battery does show his ability to acquire and master any content material. However, if he is supported with intervention to improve his comprehension, and writing, he should be able to complete his higher education”.

(The report has 12 specific recommendations, which are not included here).

Future Plans: Waiting for the right direction
We are willing to relocate to any part of India or world for next few years where he can develop and be trained. If you are abroad, you can help us in the process.

Some of the schools recommended to us in Madras or Bangalore are beyond our economy mode living and a possible budget, about Rs.80,000 to Rs.1,00,000 a year!

A Helping Hand from you
We trust in the Lord for all our personal or family needs and had made our request to Him alone. I am motivated to go a step further. With much reflection, prayer and encouragements from a few close people of God, we are presenting it:

First, you can agree to pray with us. Tell us if you are really interested to listen form us.
Secondly, you can connect us to the right people of God who will be willing to share this burden by supporting Joash’s special schooling or any relocation in that respect.
We will update you/them with regular reports and progress. We can open a special account for Joash and you/your friends can opt to send your payments to the school or the organization we work with. But to make any further move on this, we need to hear from you as to how much amount you/ your friend will be able to support us yearly for the next seven years or till we find ourselves self supportive at the earliest.

We appreciate your comments.

Yours in the Lord’s work,
Philipose & Jessy
